The English Riviera is expecting another bumper Bank Holiday weekend in late May with a big programme of events and lots of family fun.
Aqua Adrenaline Tour, 24 – 26 May
Aqua Adrenaline 2014 features The British Raceboat Championship, Zapcat Racing Series and a host of other highlights. Come down to the waterfront in Torquay 10am-5pm. The Race Event site is located at Haldon Pier. There will be catering, trade stands and activities to enjoy on Princess Gardens.
Powerboat Racing, 23 – 26 May
For high-octane delights, Torbay Classic Offshore Powerboat Racing (OCRDA) will bring excitement and glamour in its wake. The horseshoe-shaped Tor Bay makes perfect viewing for spectators who can sip a glass of something chilled from various viewpoints whilst watching the races. See the boats and meet the crews from Friday 23 May at Haldon Pier.
Geopark Festival, 24 – 30 May
Celebrate The English Riviera UNESCO-recognised Global Geopark at this year’s Geopark Festival. There’s a range of events all week that can help you enjoy, explore and experience all of the different aspects of the Geopark including kayaking, fossil hunts, geology and wildlife walks, rockpool safaris, art sketching underground, kids cookery, geology adventures at Torre Abbey and more.
BrixFest, 24– 28 May
BrixFest is a 1940s themed weekend that celebrates the best of Brixham past and present with vintage planes, delicious seafood, live music and spectacular fireworks. An annual event that is free to attend, this year promises to be bigger and better than ever as the town commemorates the 70th anniversary of D-Day 1944.
Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta (100th Anniversary), 23 and 24 May
Hosted by Brixham Yacht Club in the wonderfully picturesque fishing port of Brixham, all types, shapes and sizes of traditional sailing vessels are expected. This year is very special as it’s the 100th anniversary of the King’s Cup donated by keen sailor King George V in 1914. There are many vantage points for spectators, especially from the half-mile long breakwater with its pretty lighthouse, plus lots of harbourside restaurants, cafes and bars.
Insect Week at Paignton Zoo, 24 – 30 May
To celebrate the launch of the Zoo’s fantastic new invertebrate exhibit “Investigate” they are hosting a fun-filled insect themed week. During May half term there will be fun workshops and face painting, plus you can meet weird and wonderful bugs and explore the amazing biodiversity our insect friends have to offer! Paignton Zoo has more animals than anywhere else in the South West, so you’ll be in for a great day out!

Riviera Fringe Festival, 5 – 12 July
The Riviera Fringe Festival is a brand-new entertainment and art festival featuring comedians, music and dance of all styles and many different cultures, drama, family shows, magic, street theatre, acrobats, jugglers, art exhibitions, historical pageants and more! It will feature the best of established and emerging talent and offer pre-Edinburgh performers the opportunity to premier their new shows in the wonderful English Riviera.
The International Agatha Christie Festival, 14 – 21 September
This year the world-famous Agatha Christie Festival has received new Arts Council funding and is being relaunched as a literary festival with well-known crime writers expected and a brand-new base at historic Torre Abbey on the seafront at Torquay. The annual Agatha Christie Festival is held on the English Riviera in honour of the Queen of Crime, who was born in Torquay on 15th September 1890. The festival is a fabulous occasion for fans from all over the world to congregate and celebrate Dame Agatha Christie’s life and times. Round every corner there is a murder mystery: on steam trains, in spooky country inns, and in rambling seaside pubs. The new 2014 programme and website to be launched in early June
